is there any way to over lay with some kind of a gring that is to scale?  like 1 foot by 1 foot or 4' x 4'??   thanks for the help Byron

Byron,
This may not relate to you, but if you are doing your design work in VB, I think you will find that to be more difficult then getting yourself a piece of grid paper and laying out your design on it, scan it to a jpg and then putting it on a foundation and then start drawing your walls. Of course if you have autocad or any other floor plan software it is easy to turn them into jpg files too. I use autocad so that works for me. Try the grid paper. Once you are set up to scan it and save as a jpg file it is very quick.
